Orange County Parents Stand Up to Gang Activity

By California Criminal Defense Attorney on October 13, 2010 - Comments off

Orange County parents have teamed up with local police officers to help put an end to gang-related activity and graffiti at many of the county’s elementary and middle schools, according to a recent report from Los Angeles ABC news affiliate KABC-TV.

The program, known as the Gang Reduction and Intervention Partnership, or GRIP, stations parents at 26 local schools. The parents greet students at the beginning of each day and help ensure that students are following their school’s dress code and are not dressed in gang colors or symbols. The program is designed to reduce gang crimes in Orange County as well as graffiti at the schools, making them safer places for students and redirecting students enticed by gangs to focus on their education.

The GRIP program is organized by the Orange County District Attorney’s office, which says it has found parent intervention helpful in reducing gang activity. Schools that have participated in the program also report fewer incidents involving gang violence, as well as less vandalism and graffiti.

Gang violence has the capacity to destabilize entire communities. In their attempts to stop violence, law enforcement officers may target those who look like they might be affiliated with gangs, even if the person has done nothing wrong.
