The number of violent and other serious crimes each year in Orange County has declined in recent years, according to the California Attorney General’s Office. Although most violent crimes increased between 1999 and 2006, the number of violent crimes has gone down each year since.
For instance, in 2006 Orange County saw 3,065 robberies, 4,739 cases of aggravated assault, 475 cases of forcible rape, and 693 arson cases. In 2008, however, those numbers had decreased to 3,034 robberies, 4,101 cases of aggravated assault, 430 cases of forcible rape, and 588 arson cases. The Attorney General’s Office has not yet compiled statistics for years after 2008.
The California Attorney General’s Office also compared the rates of violent crimes such as homicide, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault in Orange County between 2005 and 2006. Although the number of violent crimes overall declined in Orange County between these two years, the rates of certain specific violent crimes rose. The number of homicides increased slightly, from 77 in 2005 to 79 in 2006. The number of aggravated assaults, however, dropped significantly, from 5,264 in 2005 to 4,739 in 2006, a drop of 10.6 percent, according to the Attorney General’s Office.
